Colugos, often referred to as ‘flying lemurs,’ are unique gliding mammals found in Southeast Asia. Despite their nickname, they are not true lemurs but belong to the family Cynocephalidae within the order Dermoptera. Colugos possess a remarkable patagium, a membrane that extends from their neck to the tips of their fingers, toes, and tail, allowing them to glide up to 200 feet between trees. They are primarily nocturnal and herbivorous, feeding on leaves, flowers, and fruits. Due to their elusive nature and the dense forests they inhabit, colugos remain one of the lesser-known mammal families, yet they play a crucial role in their ecosystem by aiding in seed dispersal.
