Storm-petrels are small, agile seabirds belonging to the families Hydrobatidae and Oceanitidae, renowned for their fluttering, bat-like flight over the ocean’s surface. Often seen “pattering” with their feet on the water as they forage, these birds are highly adapted to life at sea, spending most of their time far from land. Storm-petrels are pelagic and nest in remote island burrows or rock crevices, often returning only under the cover of darkness. Despite their widespread distribution, many species remain poorly understood due to their secretive nature and the inaccessibility of their nesting habitats
