Storm-petrels are small, agile seabirds belonging to the family Hydrobatidae, known for their fluttering flight and graceful “pattering” over ocean waves as they forage for planktonic prey. These birds spend most of their lives at sea, returning to remote islands only to breed, often under the cover of darkness. With cryptic plumage and elusive habits, storm-petrels remain some of the least understood marine birds, yet they play a vital role in ocean ecosystems and are valuable indicators of marine health.
