Otter-shrew
The Otter-shrew family, scientifically known as Potamogalidae, comprises small to medium-sized semiaquatic mammals that are native to the freshwater habitats of Central and West Africa. Recognized for their elongated bodies and dense, water-repellent fur, these creatures are adept swimmers, using their webbed hind feet to navigate swiftly through rivers and streams. Despite their name, otter-shrews are more closely related to tenrecs than to otters or shrews. They have a keen sense of smell and tactile whiskers that aid in hunting invertebrates and small fish. Due to habitat loss and environmental changes, some species within this family are considered vulnerable or threatened.
