Hutia

Hutias are a family of rodents native to the Caribbean, belonging to the family Capromyidae. These medium-sized mammals are known for their stout bodies, short limbs, and varied fur colors ranging from gray to brown. Hutias primarily inhabit forests, rock crevices, and coastal areas, where they feed on a diverse diet of leaves, fruits, and bark. Though once widespread across the Caribbean islands, many species of hutias are now endangered due to habitat destruction and introduced predators. Conservation efforts are underway to protect these unique rodents and their ecosystems.
