The Chiru, also known as the Tibetan antelope, belongs to the mammal family Bovidae and is native to the high-altitude plains of the Tibetan Plateau. These graceful creatures are well-adapted to their harsh environment, with a thick, woolly coat that provides insulation against the cold. Unfortunately, the Chiru is classified as Near Threatened due to poaching and habitat loss, primarily driven by the demand for their fine underfur, known as shahtoosh. Conservation efforts are underway to protect this unique species and preserve its fragile ecosystem.
