The family primarily consists of two species: the wild turkey (Meleagris gallopavo) and the ocellated turkey (Meleagris ocellata). Wild turkeys are found throughout the United States and Canada, while the ocellated turkey inhabits the Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico. These birds are known for their distinctive plumage, featuring iridescent feathers, and the males’ fan-shaped tails used in courtship displays. Turkeys are omnivorous, feeding on a diet that includes seeds, insects, and small reptiles. They are also an important cultural symbol, especially in the United States, where they are associated with Thanksgiving feasts.
