Crakes are small to medium-sized birds in the rail family (Rallidae), known for their secretive behaviour and preference for dense wetland habitats. With their slender bodies and strong legs, crakes are well-adapted to slipping through reeds and grasses as they forage for insects, seeds, and aquatic invertebrates. Though often heard more than seen, many species produce distinctive calls, especially during the breeding season. Crakes are distributed worldwide and play an important role in the health of wetland ecosystems.
