The Baiji, also known as the Yangtze River dolphin, is part of the mammal family Platanistidae. This unique freshwater species was once found exclusively in the Yangtze River in China. Known for its long, narrow beak and pale bluish-gray skin, the Baiji was highly adapted to its riverine environment. Unfortunately, due to environmental degradation, industrialization, and overfishing, the Baiji is now considered functionally extinct. Efforts to conserve and protect its habitat came too late, making the Baiji a symbol of the urgent need for conservation of aquatic ecosystems.
