The Buttonquail family, scientifically known as Turnicidae, consists of small, ground-dwelling birds predominantly found in the Old World tropics and subtropics. Unlike true quails, buttonquails are more closely related to shorebirds and are known for their unique reproductive behavior, where females are more brightly colored and take the lead in courtship. These birds have adapted well to grassland and scrub habitats, using their cryptic plumage for camouflage. Buttonquails are also notable for their distinctive drumming calls, produced by the females as part of their mating rituals.
