
The American Kestrel (Falco sparverius) is North America’s smallest and most colorful falcon. Physical Characteristics
Measuring just 22–31 cm (9–12 inches) in length and weighing between 80–165 grams (3–5.8 oz), the American Kestrel is roughly the size of a Mourning Dove. Yet what it lacks in size, it more than makes up for in appearance. It features bold coloration and distinctive markings—males have slate-blue wings and crown, a rusty back and tail, and black barring. Females, slightly larger than males, display more uniform rufous plumage with extensive barring across the back, wings, and tail.
Both sexes exhibit a pair of bold vertical black “mustache” marks on their white faces and a pair of black spots—often called “false eyes”—on the nape. These markings likely serve to confuse predators and prey.
Their slender, pointed wings and long tail make them agile fliers capable of sudden turns and fast dives, ideal for hunting on the wing or from perches.
Range and Habitat
The American Kestrel is widely distributed across the Western Hemisphere. It breeds throughout most of North America, including Canada and the United States, and winters as far south as Central and South America. Some northern populations migrate to warmer regions during winter, while kestrels in the southern parts of their range are often year-round residents.
Kestrels prefer open habitats such as grasslands, meadows, deserts, farmland, and even urban parks and roadsides. They thrive in areas with ample hunting grounds and scattered perching sites, including power lines, fence posts, and tree branches.
Because they rely on cavities for nesting, kestrels often take advantage of natural tree holes, old woodpecker nests, building crevices, and human-made nest boxes.
Behavior and Diet
The American Kestrel is a sit-and-wait predator, often seen perched conspicuously while scanning for prey or hovering in place—a behavior known as “kiting”—using rapid wingbeats and tail fanning. This hovering ability allows it to hunt in areas without elevated perches, especially in open grasslands.
Kestrels have a diverse diet. Insects such as grasshoppers, beetles, dragonflies, and moths make up a significant portion, especially during warmer months. They also prey on small mammals (like mice and voles), lizards, frogs, and even small birds. Their hunting technique combines keen eyesight with rapid, agile pursuit.
Interestingly, kestrels can see ultraviolet light, which helps them detect the urine trails of rodents, increasing their hunting success.
Breeding and Lifecycle
American Kestrels typically begin breeding in late winter or early spring. Pairs form monogamous bonds, and the male often performs aerial displays and food offerings to attract a mate. Once paired, they select a suitable nesting cavity, often in a tree, building, or nest box.
The female lays 4–5 eggs and incubates them for about 26–31 days. During incubation, the male provides food. Once hatched, both parents feed the young, who fledge after about 4–5 weeks. Juvenile kestrels resemble adults but are duller in coloration and begin hunting soon after fledging.
Young birds face high mortality in their first year, but those that survive can live up to 10 years in the wild.
Conservation Status and Threats
The American Kestrel is classified as a species of Least Concern by the IUCN, but its populations in some areas, especially in the northeastern United States, have experienced declines. Potential threats include:
- Habitat Loss: Urban development, intensive agriculture, and deforestation reduce suitable hunting grounds and nesting sites.
- Pesticides: Insecticides reduce prey availability and may directly harm kestrels through bioaccumulation.
- Competition: Invasive species like European Starlings compete for nesting cavities.
- Collisions: Vehicle strikes and window collisions are common, especially in suburban environments.
