Chevrotain

The Chevrotain, often referred to as the “mouse deer,” is a small, elusive member of the Tragulidae family, inhabiting the dense tropical forests of Africa and Asia. Despite their deer-like appearance, chevrotains are neither true deer nor rodents, and they hold the distinction of being the world’s smallest hoofed mammals. These nocturnal creatures are known for their timid nature and solitary lifestyle, typically feeding on a diet of fruits, leaves, and shoots. While they remain relatively obscure and understudied, chevrotains play a vital role in their ecosystems as seed dispersers and prey for larger predators.
