Nothura

The Nothura bird family, belonging to the tinamou group, is native to South America and is renowned for its ground-dwelling habits. These birds are part of the larger family Tinamidae and are among the few species capable of flight, though they prefer running to evade predators. Nothuras have a distinctive appearance with their compact bodies, short tails, and cryptic plumage, which helps them blend into the grasslands and scrublands where they reside. They are primarily granivorous, feeding on seeds, but also consume insects and small invertebrates. Their call is a melodious whistle, often heard during the breeding season, which is crucial for communication and mating.
