The striped swallows of Southern Africa are some what simmilar in appearance and this guide aims to assist with identification and to shed light on a few misconceptions.
The two swallows in this group are very similar in appearance in that they both had a blure back, rufous rump, rufous crown and face, and they both have streaking all the way from the throat right down to the lover belly.
There are however a few differences in the group. The differences you are looking for are:
- Either a pale rufous rump or a dark rufous rump with colour wrapping round onto the vent.
- Rufous crown restricted to nape, crown and top of the face or rufous crown extending onto the ear coverts
- Size difference in the two species. I flight the Greater Striped Swallow is clearly a larger bird.
