Rietpan
[Rietpan]
by Gordon King Date Added: Tuesday 12 July, 2011
Graeme, Sarah and I spent a few hours driving through the hills around Rietpan looking for grassland species. Rietpan is still playing host to several thousand Spur-wing Goose at the moment. The surrounding grassland provided some very good views of Spike-heeled Lark, Eastern Clapper Lark and Red-capped Lark. A group of around 10 Orange River Francolin joined the more obvious Swainsons Francolin out in the open for some morning calling. This area is a great alternative venue to Suikerbosrand when it comes to some of the grassland species. I am sure we will eventually pick up Eastern Long-billed Lark up here too making it an ideal venue to relatively easily get Rufous-naped Lark, Spike-heeled Lark, Red-capped Lark and Eastern Clapper Lark...
