Rondebult Bird Sanctuary
[RondebultBir]
by warren mckay Date Added: Sunday 11 July, 2010
popped in at rondebult this morning to see how the upgrade was going. An extensive and paved parking area is near completion. A new stonework entrance has been built. The four hides on the south side have had security gates installed and the keys are with the security guard. A lot of new bench's have been installed. A lot of working is still going on and when completed will be a long awaited facelift. However there is always a downside. An extensive burn programme has taken place and large areas of the spanish reedbeds have been destroyed. The hide on the far left has no reeds at all any more and all the bamboo has been removed. I understand it will grow back but complete habitats has been destroyed leaving nothing for bittern, african swamphen, moorhen, african snipe and green backed heron to hide in. Walking out past the hides and wetlands the burn is not that bad,but a large herd of bontibok have been introduced which is unsustainable on this piece of land. i really think once the reeds have grown back and the construction is complete rondebult will be worthwhile to visit once again...
