Latest Lifers: Burchell's Courser
We went to Rietvlei Nature Reserve on Sunday, and were thrilled to find a Temminck's Courser, standing in the middle of a track, unconcerned about our car which was about 5 metres away. Dennis managed to take a few nice photo's. Eventually the bird just strolled off down the track, as if we were not there. Truly a great moment. We went to the wetland area above the Marais Dam (the Courser was on that track), and saw that the wall had broken and all the dammed up water had disappeared, leaving mud-flats with a few Sandpipers, but not much else. I'm not sure when that happened, but you can see the path the water took right down into the vlei area, a broad band of flattened grass, and part of the bridge over the road below Marais dam had washed away. (The road has been repaired to some extent, so that we could cross the river onto the Vlei route). Other highlights were the Dark Capped Yellow Warbler which lives in the shrubbery in the vicinity of Owl Bridge, and thousands of swallows feasting on the eruptions of flying ants. We also heard the Melodious Lark, but were unable to spot it.
