gordon created the topic: Forum upgrade soon
Hi All,

I will be upgrading the forum section of the site this weekend.

There are a lot of new features in the upgrade including much easier image upload functionality.

The site will be down for a while on Friday evening.

Thanks!
Gordon

Hi Philip,

I am busy re-writing it at the moment using the latest .NET technologies so it should be a little more efficient than the current version. Doug wrote the old version using VB 6, so I am basically rewriting from scratch using .NET 3.5.

Hopefully I can get this ready within a couple of weeks.

Just a hint for those that will use it. You will need to download .NET 3.5 and install on your PC's. You should actually do this anyway however it is a requirement/pre-requisite for any application written with Microsoft's latest technologies.

The new version of Twitch Lister will only be around 6MB though the initial install of .NET 3.5 will require a 200MB download!

Cheers,
Gordon

Gordon i did not know that you are also in the IT field.

How can i check if windows has not already downloaded and installed .NET 3.5 before i do a 200mb download. Is this a stand alone program or part of windows?

Hi Philip,

He he he he, how do you think Simply Birding got built... and is maintained...

What you don't see behind the scenes is the hours of work every night to add modifications and try and integrate all the various parts of the site.

I have had to learn both Perl and PHP because of the site. The languages I have now used both because of the site and due to work include the two mentioned as well as VB, C#, Java and Javascript as well as learning various other aspects of database design and data modelling to try and keep corruption out of our data. Of course then there is also SQL and MSQL, Stored Procedures, XML and AJAX. Rather a lot to fill the brain... no wonder I can never remember the names of birds! <!-- s8) --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_cool.gif" alt="8)" title="Cool" /><!-- s8) -->

To check, the easiest is just to open your control panel, then the Add or Remove Programs section and have a look in there for "Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5"

Cheers,
Gordon

Some of the programming software that you are using i have never heard of. Keep it up, rather you than i.

:) At least you have birding and photography to relax you.

IT and particularly software development is both mentally stimulating and relaxing (most of the time) as well as being enjoyable.

They always say "do what you love and love what you do"... of course combine that with birding and.... <!-- s8) --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_cool.gif" alt="8)" title="Cool" /><!-- s8) -->
