I set off on a rather chilly 10km walk this morning in Central Santiago with the intention of taking some photographs of the city with the backdrop of fresh snow on the Andes and not too much of the notorious Santiago smog, which had mostly been blown away by 2 days of high winds and snow (rain in the city). So I had only my 40D with a 44mm lens as I did not want to be burdened with the heavy 1D and 300mm lens.

This is the view from my apartment yesterday.

This morning I stumbled across the Parque Bicentenario, which I had not visited before, and achieved my objective of some interesting city shots. The large tower is the still-to-be-completed 325m high Gran Torre, the tallest building in the southern hemisphere.

I then regretted not having the long lens as there was quite a bit of bird life about. I managed a few decent shots of the easier to photograph ones.

First an exotic species on display - the Chilean Flamingo - a high (4,000m) Andean salt lake species.

...and 3 resident species

Black-necked Swan

Spot-flanked Gallinule

Yellow-winged Blackbird - male, immature male and female
