Well, Moses my birding guide certainly saved the best for last - 2 nights in Samburu National Reserve. In fact, as you will see, saving the best for last also applies to the last addition to the bird list before leaving the park for the long drive to Nairobi, the airport and the flight back to Joburg.

Three contiguous national reserves, Samburu together with Buffalo Springs to the south across the Ewaso Nyiro River, and Shaba to the east, are known collectivly as "the Grand Shaba". This was the one-time home of the legendary conservationists, George and Joy Adamson, and their perhaps even more legendary lioness Elsa - the film "Born Free" tells their story. You can certainly fall in love with this area - I was reluctant to leave.

We birded in both Samburu and Buffalo Springs. Buffalo Springs is drier than Samburu with more widely scattered trees and shrubs, and less grass. These two images are looking north-west across the river to Samburu beyond and you can definitely see the difference.

The Ewaso Nyiro River ("river of muddy water" in the local language) separates the reserves, but the only bridge linking the two was swept away in flooding a few years ago, so getting from one reserve to the other means a lengthy detour.

The gerenuk (or Long-necked Antelope), a peculiar species found in these arid parts of east Africa, crossing the main access road in Samburu. The difference in vegetation, close here to the river, can clearly be seen.

The scene is set - so now for some birds.

African Grey Flycatcher - difficult to separate from the Pale Flyctcher, but fortunately the latter prefers moister woodland.
