Day 5 - today we headed for the Castle Forest area on the southern slopes of Mount Kenya, where we spent 2 nights at the Castle Forest Lodge at 2,150m amsl. The lodge was originally built as a retreat for the British royal family, and later used by the army for senior officers. It is situated in a clearing in the natural forest at the end of a 2.5 km road which provides an excellent opportunity for forest birding.

the chalets at Castle Forest Lodge - believe it or not Batian peak of Mount Kenya lies in the cloud behind

We ticked off 71 species in the day and a half of birding here, but what we lacked in quantity we made up for in quality

African Dusky Flycatcher - a bit bedraggled from steady drizzle

African Hill Babbler - despite its name it is a warbler, placed in the Sylvidae

African Olive Pigeon - I didn't manage any photos of one of the lifers here, the Eastern Bronze-naped Pigeon

African Pied Wagtail

African Stonechat - male and female

immature Augur Buzzard

male Baglafecht Weaver - sub-species reichenowi

Bar-tailed Trogon - it did not turn around, but there is just enough in this shot to be sure of the ID

Black Saw-Wing

Black-collared Apalis

Black-throated Apalis

Brown-capped Weaver - male and female

Grey-headed Nigrita

Hadada Ibis
