Day 4 - we left Thomson's Fall for Nyeri. The main objectives here were a reliable site for Mackinder's Eagle-Owl and to find the range restricted Kenyan endemic Hinde's Babbler.

We were successful on both counts.

Mackinder's Eagle-Owl is regarded as a sub-species of the Cape Eagle-Owl (Bubo capensis mackinderi) by the IOC, although some authorities regard this larger and more tawny coloured sub-species as a full species Bubo mackinderi). We located one roosting on a ledge on a small cliff, partially obscured by overhanging vegetation - quite a mission to get a convincing photo.

The status of Hinde's Babbler is Vulnerable, being threatened by habitat loss, since it favours secondary growth associated with arable land and plantations. We located a small group of 5 birds and then spent some time chasing them through banana, cassava, maize and coffee crops before finally getting some photos.

So here they are with a few others from the day.
