Hi all

Jenny and I (and our daughter Megan) have just returned from a 2-week adventure in Brazil, where we concentrated
on the endangered Atlantic rainforest habitat between Sao Paulo and Rio. This habitat is now down to 6% coverage
compared with 200 years ago, and contains one of the greatest concentrations of endemics in South America.
Fortunately the rainforest is now protected, so should not shrink much more into the future.

We saw 278 species in two weeks (265 lifers, 41 endemics) and heard 8 more. This first set of pictures were taken
in and around Campos do Jordao, which is in the mountains about 170 kms north of Sao Paulo. They show just a
few of some of the most gaudy and beautiful birds we have clapped eyes on.

Three of the 17 hummingbirds first

Brazilian Ruby (male)

White-throated Hummingbird

Black-breasted Plovercrest

Then two of the most colourful

Plush-crested Jay

Blue-naped Chlorophonia (female)

The pics don't really do justice to the real live birds, which are Brazilliant!
More to follow as they come off the laptop.....

Oh do keep posting. These are brilliant and I am extremely envious as I have never seen a hummingbird.

Great photos Peter! The SE Atlantic Rain Forests are some of the most exciting birding that I have ever done! There is just an incredible variety of species and my first morning of my first ever day in South America where the amazing lifers just came at me thick and fast shall remain one of my most memorable birding experiences ever! That first taste of the amazing birding in South America has had me returning several times to the continent since then to just take in a little more of it...

Looking forward to seeing more photos and having my urge for another visit to the birdiest continent in the world being built up dramatically again...
