Hi all

The Northern Cape is a great place to visit at any time of the year, and our visit this last August was no exception.
I have already posted a report on the stunning raptors that we saw in the Kgalagadi National Park, so here are a few
more of the birds that were fairly "close and personal". We stopped over in Kimberley on the way back, with our
primary target being Long-tailed Pipit, and managed to get pretty cracking views of this large, rather plain
member of the tribe. This completed our suite of Southern African pipits, and we were happy campers when we got
home. The only disappointment of the trip was not linking up with Red-necked Falcon, which was a blessing in a
way, because it means we will have to go back! :D

Here are a dozen of the pix, and please excuse the "noise" in the last three, which were taken at high ISO in poor
light.

Crimson-breasted Shrike

Swallow-tailed Bee-eater

Namaqua Sandgrouse

Spike-heeled Lark

Cape Crow

Kori Bustard

African Red-eyed Bulbul

Familiar Chat

Long-tailed Pipit (lifer)

Temminck's Courser

Pink-billed Lark

Cheers for now.

Hi Peter, love your photos!
Well done on getting the pipit!
They are such weird looking birds with that small bill and almost disproportionately small head!

Cheers,
Gordon

Hi Peter

Thanks for posting. I love the northern cape, but I am still trying to convince the wife and kids to drive all the way out there to look for long tailed pipit and kimberly pipit. She draws the line at LBJ's...

Hi Mossie

LBJ's are a fun challenge! There are also lots of other fun things for the family to do in Kimberley, whilst you sneak off for an hour or two each day chasing lifers :D
We were shown around by a really good local guide, Henry van Wyk. His phone number is 0836422144.

I think the only reason the wife would want to go to kimberly is to find some nice daimond earings <!-- s:lol: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_lol.gif" alt="" title="Laughing" /><!-- s:lol: -->
