Hi All,

Thought I would share some photography technique with you all that happens to work for me...

These shots have been taken with my old Pentax K10D and the Pentax 75-300mm lens. Most were shot using F9, ISO 400, 1/1000s with +1 EV compensation... The first being with F10...

The secret to getting shots like these with such old and slow equipment is to sit and watch the behaviour of the bird for a while first. In this case the swallow kept flying away from the perch to catch insects then return to the same place... use the following method to get the photo's:
1. photophraph the bird on the perch first to get your focus and exposure correct or as you like it. Also set your camera on continuous shooting mode.
2. Go for a higher shutter speed as you will be photographing a fast moving object so anything 1/1000s or faster should be fine. Again adjust your cameras ISO to allow for a higher shutter.
3. you want a slightly deeper DOF so F9 or F10 which seemed about right for the focal length used here randing from 200-300mm...
5. In this case I went for a +1EV compensation to bring out the darker plumage on the swallow against the light background.
6. Finally set your camera to use the AF button to focus and shutter release to only handle shutter release. ie do not let your shutter release button handle both focus and shutter release. The reason for this is that you pre focus on the perch before the bird approaches.
7. Keep the camera locked on the perch leaving enough room to capture the bird as it approaches the perch.
8. use one eye to watch the perch and the other to watch the swallow approaching and when it gets close press and hold the shutter release button without moving the camera.
9. Experiment and have fun!! <!-- s:spin: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/spin.gif" alt=":spin:" title="Spinning" /><!-- s:spin: -->

Now for the images:
First get the camera set up, focal lenght, focus, exposure, etc.

Wait till the bird is about to enter the frame and press and hold the shutter button

Hope you enjoyed!

Cheers,
Gordon
