Rudolph created the topic: Birds against bright backgrounds
Often I get birds against a bright background, e.g. on a high tree. After editing to get detail onto the bird, the background is nearly white, or "burnt-out".

Are there any tricks to reduce this problem or is physics and dynamic range the limit?

Cheers
Rudolph

In such situations I will switch the flash on to take the picture, then use post processing to cut the bird out the picture, darken the background and then repaste the bird back into the photo... however that is only if the bird is really unusual. Normally I would not attempt to photograph against a very bright background like that (white-out conditions with a small dark subject)...

Also I found the shadow/highlights adjustment in photoshop awesome. Can turn up the low light areas and darken the highlights. Works very well.

The original looked no where as good as this...
