Oh my scented trousers aperture (or any photo cataloging software) is awesome. One copy of a file imported into a project. Add tags and you can search images by a range of keywords and then create photo albums which are just collections of references to images - one photo occurs in many albums with no duplicate images!!! And that is the tip of the iceberg!!!

I have tagged bird pics with English species, scientific name down to subspecies as well as location and Genus.

I can search Lark and it shows me all my lark pics. Can search specific species by english or scientific name down to subspecies and it shows me all my pics. I can even search Alaudidae and I get all the Alaudidae pics I have.
I can even search by scientific family e.g. search "Certhilauda" and I will get only the pics of Certhilauda larks in my results.

This is simply not physically possibly by saving photos in folders and searching with windows explorer.

I can then search within searches so I can go "Alaudidae" and then search only for photos ranked 4 star or higher....

yeeeeehhhhhaaaaaa.

You can also create multiple "version" of your pic. You edit it. The original isn't changed. Each version is not another copy of the file. It is just a list of settings/edits for the image and then you keep one file but multiple "fixed" versions in your DB.

So get a MAC <!-- s8) --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_cool.gif" alt="8)" title="Cool" /><!-- s8) -->

Seriously though, Adobe Lightroom does the same thing and is a similar price? Also full metadata tagging/keywording of images etc.

I believe just as good as Aperture although each better in their own ways.
