You decide.

Straight out of each camera - no DPP at all. No light level changes, no changes to colour, no sharpening and no noise reduction. Both shot at IS0 400

What seems to be evident to me is that although subtle, there is a slight colour cast over the images from the 40D whilst not making them "bad" just removes the realism that you seem to get from the 1D.

It is not that there is less colour, it is just not as life like......

There also seems to be a difference in exposures, the 40D shots are darker. Anyway, judging from the expressions on Connor's face, I know which camera he prefers!!

Very similar to my 400D face! I know it's only an 'entry level' SLR but I'm still disappointed with a lot of my shots from the 400D. I think this comparison is a good demonstration of the difference in quality at the different price ranges.

I think it boils down to "You get what you pay for".

I know the 1D MKIIn costs around 12K second hand but if you look at the difference and consistency of performance... rather getting a more expensive second hand body is by far the way to go.

Absolutely spot on there. My EOS 400D + Sigma 70 - 300 APO DG lens only came to 10k brand new. I'm not complaining, it's definitely a step up from my old Fuji Finepix S5600 compact, but not as big a step as I hoped it would be. I think the autofocus function on the 400D is weak and the white balance is inconsistent and easily fooled by tricky lighting conditions. Your shots show that the 1D handles exposure and colour balance much better than the 40D.

Anybody got a spare 12K lying around? <!-- s:lol: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_lol.gif" alt=":lol:" title="Laughing" /><!-- s:lol: -->

Were the lens the same also the shooting modes ie av etc shutter speeds, ev, aperture also was the 40d set on any of the in camera settings such as standard, neutral etc. were they both set tto the same colour space, srgb or adobe rgb, aany difference to any of these could cause the difference in colour.
That said I keep buying lotto tickets in the hope of winning enough to buy a second hand 1ds mk11!
