Dave Shedman created the topic: Marievale otters.
Mariana and myself had a very nice day's birding at Marievale last Thursday and despite getting some good bird sightings and a few lifers, the stars of the show were undoubtedly the otters at the Duiker Hide. As we entered the hide we heard much splashing and commotion right in front and looked down to see a group of four otters on the rocks directly in front of the hide, devouring the remains of an enormous fish they had caught. Although there was only half the fish left, you could see that when it had been whole it must have been bigger than the otters themselves. They weren't too bothered by our presence and allowed us lots of great photos. One of them kept peeking through a hole in the side of the hide to see what we were up to.

I'll post Mariana's photos later when I've processed them, but for now, here are mine. Can someone remind me what species of otter these are?

Hi Dave

Nice post.

They are spotted necked otters. In winter, the fish slow down a lot due to the cold, and are easier for the otters to catch. With that said, they are known to successfully hunt large barble (catfish) in packs.

Doug, I've been to Marievale three times and seen otters three times! This was the first time I was able to get photos of them though. Right place, right time I guess.

Thanks Mossie, now I can rename my photos something other than just "Otter"! As I said, there was a group of at least four of them devouring that fish so you're probably right about them hunting in packs. They need to learn to read though, because there's a hide at Marievale called the Otter Hide but these guys were in front of the Duiker Hide. <!-- s:lol: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_lol.gif" alt="" title="Laughing" /><!-- s:lol: -->

Hi Dave

I had almost the exact same sighting at the Duiker hide yesterday, 3 Otters eating 2 huge barbel on the rocks right in front of the hide. I also saw one Otter close to the Otter hide.

Regards
Matthew
