Hi all,

Came across this large butterfly on the edge of the forest at Ocean View Guest Farm, East London area. Was quite impressed, don't recall seeing it before, but then the birds do get most of my attention...

Beautiful photo, how do you get these little critters to sit still?
I think it is a Papilio ophidicephalus, one of the Citrus Swallowtail species.

Jeff,

This is an Emperour Swallowtail [i:2uuzlqtx]Papilio ophidicephalus[/i:2uuzlqtx] and I think subspecies [i:2uuzlqtx]phalusco[/i:2uuzlqtx] and a very nice specimen at that too.

Well done!

Cheers,
Justin

Well done Jeff - South Africa's largest butterfly. It lives in rainforest habitat only.

"ophidicaphalus" translates to "snakes' head", so the butterfly was named for the tail pattern (if you look at the tail upside down).

Why not submit your photo to the virtual museum at SABCA - go to [u:18ncw3g9] sabca.adu.org.za/ [/u:18ncw3g9]

Regards
peter

I stand (or sit) to be corrected here but I was told many years ago that the best time to photograph butterflies is early in the morning because they have to sit still in the sunlight with their wings spread open to build up the energy for flight. Once the sun has been up for a while they're full of energy and rarely sit still for more than a few seconds. Of course, sometimes you just get lucky, especially in places like WSBG where butterflies are abundant.

Thanks to everyone for all the info, have just submitted my pic to SABCA. The shot was taken at 9am so I think I must have just been lucky -- saw the butterfly flying around when it settled close to me and kept perfectly still as I snuck up on it snapping a few shots as I got closer and closer.

Anybody out there got a butterfly list of SA for me? What better time to start keeping a list... :D

Cheers,

Jeff

I have a good PDF list with photos for the species found in Walter Sisulu National Botanical Gardens if that's any help. Obviously doesn't cover the whole of SA but it would be a start. PM me your e-mail address if you're interested (I would have to e-mail it because I can't remember which site I downloaded it from so I can't give you a link ). Maybe JGB can help you with a more comprehensive list?
