Ok.... Not birding at all but this was the most awe inspiring thing I have ever witnessed.

I was approaching the N1 near Ventersburg on the way back from Paul Roux. I saw a very interesting cloud formation and went to have a closer look.
I stopped on the side of the road and then noticed that two clouds were swirling around each other and seemed to almost start to spin. Then the ground winds picked up to an insane speed. My Tazz was actually rocking from the wind and I was not even moving!!!

As the wind was blowing I saw the start of a cylider wanting to develop with quite a dramatic roll to it.

Within a short space of time it was gone. It did not touch down although that is probably a good thing as if those winds were anything to go by, it rolled right over my car.

Anyway attached are a few photos. Top just right of center of the first photo you can see the rotation quite nicely.

I've always been surprised that SA doesn't get more tornadoes, especially with the thundery conditions up here on the Highveld. It must have been awe-inspiring and scary at the same time. Good to know you and the Tazz survived!
