HI all.

Took Karen and Connor through to Golden Gate NP for a few more lifers. As a day trip actually intended to get our cottage in Paul Roux, we never had much time at the park but it is looking amazingly green. Got a few nice scenery shots including this one I called:
Twins at the gate

And finally although no vultures, this was Karen's first atempt as a novice birder at the climb up to the Golden gate vulture restaurant.

Shows how differently people perceive things. When I photographed those two chunks of rock I called them the "tramp's teeth" because they reminded me of those hobos who only have one tooth at each side of their mouth Kudos to Karen on attempting the climb to the vulture restaurant - we didn't! Shame you missed out on vultures, you were only a few kilometres from where we saw the Lammergeier and even closer to where we saw the Cape Vulture.

As you said though, the scenery is stunning and we would have been happy being there even if we hadn't seen a single bird.

And it is so peaceful and quiet there.... I wish we could have stayed for ever. Nothing but the sound of the wind and the bird (regularly disrupted by a 4 year old)

That was the thing that struck us too, staying in that little mountain top cottage. We could see the R712 about 4km or so away from us but we couldn't hear the traffic, just wind, birds, frogs and crickets and even a bull bellowing in the valley at night. Like you, we didn't want to come home. Sure, we hear birds, frogs and crickets here too, but they're drowned out by the traffic on Hendrik Potgieter, burglar alarms, over-flying planes etc.

Nice point you make there. One thing that I have come to realize over the last little while is birding is not about birds.... Yes you go out to see birds but if al you are out for is life lists and mega twitches, as time goes by the birding seems to get a little boring... No more lifers... etc.

For me birding is about being out there. Seeing things... anything really from the vastness of the karoo plains to the towering presence of the Malutis down to watching a tiny little insect busy with its daily life. I think kids do that to you. They spot the very small things, the things you would miss and then quiz you about the things they find fascinating. They compel you to view the world differently in a way that enriches your own life vastly. You come to realize what is more important, appreciating the world for what it is or having the latest plasma TV?
