After much umming and aaahing, I finally took the plunge and decided to get myself a DSLR and 100mm Macro lens.

Yolande and I took a quick trip to WSBG so that I could play around a bit - first time shooting with a SLR and in RAW.

I still have a heap to learn, but I was reasonably happy with my first attempt.

Nice shots. I don't have one but that 105mm macro is a nice lens.

Nice DOF, what apertures were you shooting at?

I have the canon EF 100mm F2.8, and I battle to get decent DOF. At anything bigger than F16, I usually only get a DOF of about 1mm.

Mossie,

I was shooting at between F5 and F7.1. I still need to learn the relationship between DOF and apenture. At the moment I am trying to get an apenture that provides a decent shutter speed.

Cheers,
Justin

A great start, Justin, are you getting into practice for the Lepsoc photographic competition?

Hi Justin

There are some very good tables online for the canon EF 100mm f2.8 lens giving the DOF and aperture. You should find these similar/applicable to the Sigma lens you have. At the end of the day, you may have to start looking at getting a ring flash (I'm playing devils advocate with your "bank manager" ) to get more light so that you can decrease the aperture to get more DOF.

Mossie,

I have the Canon Macro lens, don't know how I typed 105mm?????

Well, I have picked up a second hand ring flash, just waiting for delivery now. I toyed with the idea of the twin-light, but that R3000,00 extra is a bit if a put off at the moment.

Cheers,
Justin
