I swear on my life, I heard a low voice that sounds like a nightjar! but are there any in Johannesburg (Northcliff)? It doesn't seem possible! <!-- s:?: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_question.gif" alt=":?:" title="Question" /><!-- s:?: -->

We had Freckled Nightjar in Bryanston before we left South Africa so I'm sure it's possible...

Cheers,
Gordon

Hi All
I'm new to the forum. Just wanted to add that we have plenty Freckled Nightjars in the Helderkruin and Roodekraans area too! I have found that the Sappi Birds of Southern Africa with the "thingy-ma-bob" that has the bird sounds recorded on it really helps. You get to hear what the bird sounds like which gives you and idea of what to look for and identify correctly.

Good luck!

There's also a bird recording site called xeno canto, which lets you download it for free. I don't think what I heard was a nightjar. I would love to go to a birding hideout in your area, to see some nightjars. I've never seen one before.
