John Young created the topic: File size limits
Hi,

I tried uploading some images a short while ago and each time I was returned to the message page it appears the image didn't get loaded. I'm assuming this is due to file size limits, and if, what is the size limit? The picture I tried to load was 1,825 KB.

Thanks,
DaveR

Hi DaveR,

Due to the fact that I pay for this site out of my own pocket, disk space is very valuable, so I have restricted each file upload to 150KiB.

I would highly recommend using photobucket to upload your pictures. It is free to use and has rather a nice function which automatically includes the img BBCode tags, so you can simply upload your images there and then copy the link for forums into your post.

I actually post 99% of my own images there.

Hope that helps!

Cheers,
Gordon

Thanks Gordon,

You mention "photobucket" - is there a URL for this <!-- s:?: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_question.gif" alt=":?:" title="Question" /><!-- s:?: -->

The option I employed on my previous post was to right click a group of images to be uploaded and send these to a mail recipient (myself) which automatically compresses them to the required size. I take it this may be a long route!!

Cheers,
Dave

Hi Dave.

I don't know which operating system you're using but I can offer some advice about filesizes that might help. If you're using Windows XP, there's a Windows powertoy that can resize images from the context menu (i.e. by right clicking). It's free and there are instructions [url=http&#58;//www&#46;microsoft&#46;com/windowsxp/using/digitalphotography/learnmore/tips/eschelman2&#46;mspx:1rlhly52]here[/url:1rlhly52] as well as a link to download it.

If you are, like me, using Windows 7 or even the dreaded Vista, you have to download a third party resizer. The one I use is available [url=http&#58;//imageresizer&#46;codeplex&#46;com/:1rlhly52]here[/url:1rlhly52].

If you're using a Mac, you're on your own! <!-- s:lol: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_lol.gif" alt=":lol:" title="Laughing" /><!-- s:lol: -->

I usually resize my bird pictures to 800 x 600 pixels in Photoshop, which makes them something like 700 - 800 kb in size, and then I right click them and use the resizer. I leave the pixel dimensions at 800 x 600 but the file size comes down to usually less than 100kb and certainly well less than the 150kb that Gordon mentioned.

I too upload them to Photobucket, I have created two special folders there, one called Simply Birding for my general bird pics and one called Mystery Birds for all those awkward ID's I like to bug everyone with. <!-- s:wink: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_wink.gif" alt=":wink:" title="Wink" /><!-- s:wink: --> Just go to [url=http://www.photobucket.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;]http://www.photobucket.com[/url] and sign up for a free account, if you haven't already done so. Photobucket is definitely the way to go because, as Gordon pointed out, disk space costs money and this way you use Photobucket's disk space and not Gordon's!

Hope some of that helps.

Hi again,

It's been a while since the last chat, but I now have a batch of photos to upload and in keeping with the "save space on Doug's" site have uploaded them to Photobucket.com.

But now how do I link the photo album created on Photobucket to a new topic on this forum? <!-- s:?: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_question.gif" alt=":?:" title="Question" /><!-- s:?: --> I've clicked on the URL and photobucket boxes that appear at the top of a new post message, but when I preview the message they don't appear!!! <!-- s:banghead: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/banghead.gif" alt=":banghead:" title="Frustration" /><!-- s:banghead: -->

Am I really being "dof" or is there a neat trick to this?? Hope someone can help.

Thanks
Dave

HI all.

The file size limits using the uploader itself are as set by the simply birding site itself. A better option, as Gordon mentioned, is to use photobucket. Simply upload your pics into photobucket and then paste the tag link into your posts on this site and it will embed your pictures. That was file size limits are restricted to the more generous ones allowed on photobucket BUT... You are still limited, for embedding photobucket links, to keeping the larger of the two dimensions down to 800 pixels.[IMG] tag link into your posts on this site and it will embed your pictures.
