Strange thing about the Yellow Crowned Bishops round here, we see them in our garden all through the year but we never seem to see transitional males. It seems that one day we just see a full breeding male down in the vlei then shortly after they start coming to our garden. Then they disappear again without ever seeming to transform back to non-breeding.

Well, during yesterday's rains we had a visit from two transitional males. What surprised me was how much greyer they looked than the transitional Southern Red Bishop. On first glance I thought they were Black Throated Canaries!

I had to tweak the exposures and white balance in Photoshop because they were shot in such poor light, though the last two were shot with flash. Hope these might help some newbies ID them if they ever see them.
