nkgray created the topic: Northern Farms Pintail
I was thinking of heading up to Northern Farms on Saturday morning to look for the male Northern Pintail.

Anyone interested in tagging along? Especially those of you also out here on the East Rand.

Neil, what is the latest word on this bird in regards to its escapee/vagrant status?

The latest I got from SAbirdnet today was that there is a strong feeling that this is a true "reverse migrant" - not quite sure what that means.

It is not ringed, keeps company with some Red-crested Pochards and is extremely skittish when approached. It is felt that an escapee would be much more habituated to human presence. Both pochards and pintail could well be true migrants.

It is probably worthwhile going and seeing the bird. That way if the decision is that this is a wild bird then everyone can tick it on their lists, if not then people can still enjoy seeing an unusual bird... :-)

Red-crested Pochard - I find it nowhere in any of my references of birds that has been seen in South Africa. If these birds are also considered "tickable" they should be bigger news than the Pintail! Does anyone know what the status of the RCPs are in terms of origin and how they may have ended up here?

Very good question Johan. If we are all rushing off to see the Pintail, why are we not also rushing for the Pochards?

Maybe they are not known to be migratory?

I believe Pintails "regularly" turn up in Zimbabwe?
