I contribute to a poetry forum online called Born Poets. Most of what I write comes into the category of humour / nonsense / surreal and quite a bit of it involves birds.

Today on the forum there was a challenge to take an existing poem and write a parody of it. This was the challenge:

"Time for a proper parody challenge - most will recognise this one;

Twinkle twinkle little star
daddy drives a rusty car
push the gearstick pull the choke
off we go in a puff of smoke.

Pick your own poem and play with it - the original should be recognisable."

So, amongst others, I chose a poem by Ogden Nash called The Hunter. Here's Nash's poem, followed by my parody of it, which all of you should be able to relate to.

The Hunter (by Ogden Nash)

The hunter crouches in his blind
'Neath camouflage of every kind,
And conjures up a quacking noise
To lend allure to his decoys.
This grown-up man, with luck and pluck,
Is hoping to outwit a duck.

The Twitcher (by yours truly)

The twitcher crouches in the hide
with reference books spread on each side.
He hopes the bird won't choose to fly
before he can identify.
He's not sure whether he should tick it
as African or Plain-Backed Pipit.

There was a young mane named Brian
Who's ID took him much time
Since he bought LBJs
And tried the new ways
He seems to be doing just fine.
