Hi

One of the birds that are absent from my list is black winged lapwing. I have seen Senegal lapwing at Cape Vidal, but not its larger cousin.

Any idea's on a good spot near Gauteng to find this species?

Not too sure what close classifies as <!-- s:lol: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_lol.gif" alt="" title="Laughing" /><!-- s:lol: --> But I have seen a single bird once near Fikland Pan in the Wakkerstroom area, and have seen again once while in the Eastern Cape on a visit to East London.

Only 2 sightings for me!

I got mine mid-winter this year at a place called Misty valley lodge close to Machadodorp in Mpumalanga. There were a group of about 7 of them wondering around on the lawns next to the lodge giving awesome views and some decent photo opportunities. To be honest I couldn't believe my luck when we arrived at our accomadation and the first bird that I saw was one of these and not only that but it was in plain sight (This bird was my first uncommon Lapwing). Having told you all of this I am not sure whether the birds are resident and what the chances of seeing them anywhere near to misty valley are now. The other thing is that the lodge is a private farm and facilities are for the use of guests only (my sister did some design work for them and hence we got to stay for a good price). For more details check out the website <!-- w -->www.mistyvalleylodge.co.za<!-- w -->

Here is one of my photo attempts.

Gee guys, for a long time I have believed it to be a mythical bird, but now you are torturing me with the pictures. I guess its back onto the road again, to see if I can find them.

I've now had my third sighting, there are at least 6 birds on a farm here in the Alexandria area, a pair there have 2 chicks!

Hi,

I know you said close to Gauteng, but for what it's worth I saw a few en route to Creighton (Southern end of KZN) a few months ago. A friend of mine in Pongola says they're a regular sighting at the Pongola Golf course.

Cheers,
Dave
