Well all I can say is ....... WOW!

I don't think I'll ever see a Peregrine perching in my garden in Atlasville.

Which would those be? Since we moved here 2 years ago I got to see my first
African Cuckoo Hawk,
Peregrine Falcon,
Green-capped Eremomela,
in my own garden! I just couldn't believe my luck. The Martial Eagle sat in the garden once swooped down and caught a snake just outside the fence and flew right infront of us all (the whole family was here for Christmas and was watching through the glass door) with the snake dangling from it's feet. What a treat!

Today started well with a pair of Giant Kingfishers waking us up with their loud bursts of kek-kek-kek! It’s the second time I’ve seen them in the garden but they don’t make the garden list yet. Later in the day a pair of Lanner Falcons perched in the large Jackalberry tree. But, we also spotted three intruders. Three black boys were standing near the fence among the bushes and on approach they said that they are picking guavas. Because of previous experiences I asked if they weren’t snaring birds and they said no. But I wasn’t satisfied and I circled the fence and surprised them. They ran away and then I found the snares with guava fruits as bait and bits of string to trap the feet of fruit eating birds.

Last year I lost 9 Black-collard Barbets at the same spot caught with the same type of snares. That was the whole population of Barbets which nested in the garden. A new pair has moved in recently and I don’t want to see them go the same way.
