Hi

I have been considering purchasing the Sasol eBirds for my iphone recently. It does not come at a huge price ($29), however, the reviews I have read have been mixed. I love the idea of having a bird book of sorts on a hand held device.

I searched the forum archives a came across a post from Doug saying that he was very impressed with the software. Doug is this still the case and would you recommend the purchase? Anybody else using it? What are your thoughts? Have the recent updates been of any use?

Would love to hear your feedback.

Cheers,
Grant

G'day Grant

I have it on my iPod Touch. It is very good. Worth the money for the calls alone. I spent 12 months in Tanzania in 2010-2011 and it was very useful although there is quite a bit of variation within species between Southern and East Africa (some taxonomic splits coming I suspect).

It corresponds currently to the 3rd edition of the book and I see there is now a 4th edition. Possibly wait and see if a new version of the app comes out but this might be a free upgrade anyway.

I don't think you would regret the purchase.

Cheers
Steve

Hi Grant,

Doug used the product a lot before his iPhone was stolen. Very good product!

Cheers,

Hi Neil.

Forst off just to openly say I have a bit of a vested interest. I have and am continuing to help PDA solutions to improve and increase the bird calls in the iPhone app. In fact about 230 of the calls in the app are my own recordings.

Off hand I think it is a brilliant app, but not just because I am involved with it. It is certainly worth the money and as far as I know, there is no competitive iPhone birding app at this stage for Southern African species.

I would have to agree that this is one of those software that works really great. Have actually used this a lot of times from way before which have been really helpful.

Though I was kind of hesitant to begin with, it was indeed a great purchase or sort of investment from my part. That should suit you quite well on your own. Give me a feedback on what you think of it next time.
