Hi

I note that the previous thread is closed. Please note that it was not my intention to solicit information on how to violate any of the copyright agreements of the below mentioned e-publications.

If anybody has ever tried to publish something for the South African market, AND made money from it, they will realise, that the majority of the published works in small fields such as South African birds and birding are published at a loss. By that I mean that if one had to work out how many hours one puts into photographing, painting, or recording 950 birds, or just gathering detailed info on a small group of birds, and then putting it into a publishable format, you would realise that the profits made (if any) vs the time spent, equate to slave labour!!!

Hence, I have the utmost respect for those who contribute to South African birding information and literature whether it be books, photographs web sites whatever. I also encourage you all to invest in the many rich resources that are available to South African birders so as to encourage those interested in putting a publication out, to at least get something out. They are not rolling in dough, they do it for the love of it.

To give you a hypothetical example, can you image Mr Jack Crow going to a publisher with a book on Larks. “What on earth is a Lark?” Asks the publisher, and “Exactly how many copies of such a book do you honestly expect to sell?”, he larks loudly “Lets see, if you sell 200 copies to your birding buddies, and you get R40 a copy, wow, that’s a R8000 bucks, and it took you two years to put together. So that’s a salary of R4000 a year. At least you don’t have to pay tax on it.” See my point

No worries Mossie!

Doug and I have spent the last three years writing a bird book (cannot say just yet what it is about) and yes I agree with you, it is because we love birding that we have put in so much time on it!

Cheers,
Gordon
