My Wife and I have recently returned from a 6 month overlanding trip through Southern and East Africa. During the trip I notched up many a lfer but now have a bit of a problem as to how I go about updating my Life Lists.

I have a Southern African Life list which I belive extends from South Africa to the Kunene and Zambezi Rivers in the north and east, therefore, SA, Zim, Namibia and Southern Moz fall within this list. Now, what if one sees a bird in Kenya but this bird can also be found in Zimbabwe. Does one include it in their Southern African list or Their World list or both?

Once I have all my pics in order I will post some of the more interesting as well as those I just can not ID.

Good to be back on the forum too.

Cheers,

Grant

Hi Grant,

Sounds like a great trip! Personally, I place birds on my lists based only on where I have seen them rather than countries where they can be found, so there is some overlap. In my case the best example is the humble House Sparrow, which I have seen both here in South Africa and back in the UK when I lived there. It is, therefore, on both my UK list and my SA list, but I only count it once on my world list. I will no doubt see it again next year when I visit France and Switzerland but I won't count it as an addition to my world list as it's already on there.

Others may do it differently, but that's how I do it.

Thanks Dave

That was kind of my thinking.. So basically the bird seen in Kenya would go on my world list but not on my Southern African List, but, my South African List is essentially a section or part of my World List. I better get cracking on my world list then.

Cheers,

Grant
