Doug,

There are 2 main hide locations at the West Coast National Park. From a photographic standpoint the am's are best as in the afternoon the sun is shining from behind the birds. For waders the 2 hides at Geelbek are best. They become "usable" for watching waders as the tide recedes usually about 4.5 hours after high tide in Table bay (if I remember correctly) This is the point at which shallow water is exposed at the hides. As the tides recede further more and more waders appear but they start to be further away from the hide. Best viewing is with the incoming tide starting to push the birds back towards you in the hide. Photographically the best is a sunny day with an early morning incoming tide.

The other hide at Seeberg is best at high tide as the birds are pushed closer to the hide which is on the edge of the dunes.

I was in Capetown last weekend and got Bar Tailed Godwit at Geelbek despite high and cold winds.
There are 2 other hides at Geelbek to the south of the farmhouse on a salt pan. Ask at the info desk for directions. They are 20 min walk. The desk will tell you they are broken and dont advise you to go there but if the tide is in it is worth walking to the first of these hides as it seems many of the smaller waders move to the salt pan at high tide. Got Chestnut banded plover at the first hide last weekend. Gained nothing by walking on to the second hide at the salt pan. Low tide on Friday is at08h00 and high tideat 14h00. Should be good at Geelbek in the early to mid morning.

See write up in Claire and Callan's book.

Regards,

Bruce Paterson
