Saltholme lies just upriver from the mouth of the River Tees in north-east England. Pans and grassland (dry and wet) provide the bird habitats. A very different suite of species to those I saw yesterday. Here are some of them.

Canada Goose



Mute Swan - adult with orange beak and immature with grey beak



Black-headed Gull breeding is in full swing.



They compete with Common Tern for the prime nesting spots







Meadow Pipit



There are young of most species around right now, like these Common Starling



Just a reminder of the adult plumage of the European Goldfinch which I also posted yesterday



and here is a juvenile - very confusing but for those wing markings



Saltholme provide artificial nesting boxes for Sand Martin and you can see the nestlings being fed here





After leaving Saltholme a drive west onto the moors turned up a European Golden Plover
