Well, 2013 started with my first rainless day since arriving in London on 20th December - and it was my last day in the UK before heading back to work in Chile. I made the most of it and got in a few hours birding.

After a 2012 which from a mix of Chile, Peru, Argentina, Kenya, UK and SA produced a year's total of 763 species, including 210 lifers (although my Southern Africa total remained unchanged) I managed a lifer on the first day of the new birding year - Eurasian Siskin.

Here it is with a few other highlights of the day's birding.

Eurasian Siskin - male and female

Common Redpoll

Goldfinch

Britain's smallest bird - Goldcrest

Dunnock

...and two of London's biggest bird pests

Rose-ringed Parakeet

and Common [Eurasian] Starling

Happy New Year, and great birding in 2013.

Neil
