Just a word of warning, I live in Noordheuwel over the hill from WSBG and out CPF (Community Policing Forum) covers the area bording WSBG. This area has had a spate of criminal activity, so please just be vigilant in these "wilderness areas"

I have seen and photographed the GHBS at WS a few times during last year, but have not seen it yet this year. I have also never found the Fairy flycatcher there - any ideas as to where in the gardens they are?

Yes the area JGB talks about above the waterfall and the black eagles's nest has unfortunately become very unsafe in such a manner that security companies now are waiting at the intersection leading up into Rangeview 4, escorting females home safely. Even the adjoining Sugarbush Estate has become very unsafe and locked after the assault of a schoolgirl - pity as I also live on the ridge behind WS and loved popping in into these 2 areas every morning before I'm off to see clients

The gardens however are very safe!
I only this past sunday discovered another Nature Reserve in that area: Little Falls Nature Reserve - we went to 'check it out' - but what dodgy and scaly surroundings and people hanging around there. Also sad, it seems a beautiful reserve...

Yolande,

I have only seen the Fairy flycatchers in WSNBG on one occasion. bear the followng in mind - they are very small, they are very active , constantly on the move , never still for a second. When I saw them it was in the early part of the forest walk leading up from the Sasol dam towards the arboretum. the birds were flitting around in the canopy of the trees bordering the adjoining grasslands. My son Duncan picked them up at the new cafeteria/ coffee shop at Rietvlei Dam (Pretoria) about 6 weeks ago . I went through about 3 weeks ago desperate to find them for an overseas visitor. I went to the same spot as mentioned by Duncan (contact me directly for more details)and conjured them up in seconds by playing the call briefly. Rietvlei may be worth a try if you dont come right at WSNBG. I Expect to be going to WSNBG this weekend looking for the Peregrine - will keep an eye open foR the Fairy Fycatchers and get back to you if I have any luck.

Regards,

Bruce

I went to WSBG today, nothing out of the ordinary...Cape Rock Thrushes were very tame up at the look out point above the waterfall, the eagles displayed well, but no sign of any other raptors... :( (No peregrines in site).....The Sasol Hide had the Green-backed Heron as per usual, little grebe and Black Duck....The only bird I saw today I had not recorded for WSBG yet was Brown-Crowned Tchagra....

Yolande, all three occasions I have seen Fairy Flycatcher, once was in the tall trees on the lawns to the left of the path a few hundered metres after entering the main entrance....The second 2 times were up on the look out above the Waterfall, there is a fair amount of bush infront of the bench once can sit on....I've seen them there both times, best of luck!!!

The gardens were full of butterflies...as today was quite warm!!

I heard Wailing up above the Waterfall when I was there last, and the Pied Barbets were calling on the hill slopes to the right of the waterfall, both species I have not seen as of yet though at WSBG.

I went to the Gardens again on Tuesday, 29th June. I saw 2 Fairy Flycatchers, first one was at the top of the arboretum, where it verges with the veld. The 2nd time was near the boardwalk behind the hide. If you walk on the boardwalk there is a patch of Ouhout, there is a small dirt path leading away to some of the estates. This path is very inconspicious and you can miss it easily. Do not confuse this path with the Ouhout walk. Other intresting birds were African Grey Hornbill, Lesser Honeyguides, Streaky-headed Seedeater, Red-throated Wryneck and Brown-hooded Kingfisher. On the Forest walk a tree has fallen down, a cross the river, and there are some bees flying around there making them easy pickings for Lesser Honeyguides and other birds.

We're going on Sunday morning (July 4th) but we'll be getting there very early (well, as early as they'll open the gates anyway) as Watershed are playing there in the afternoon and it's going to get busy and noisy! Maybe I should wear bright colours to make sure you spot me before bumping into me!

Dave, just to make sure you know, the entrance fee on the 4th will be R50p p for ALL visitors, apparently it's to stop too many people from pitching up for the concert.
