Tom created the topic: Help needed with call ID
The following two calls were recorded off the live streaming cam on <!-- w --> www.africam.com <!-- w --> at Nkhoro Bush Lodge in the northern Sabi Sands Game Reserve. Can anyone assist in identifying the calls:

Call 1 - recorded during the day on 17 October 2006

Call 2 - recorded at night on 17 October 2006. The Fiery-necked nightjar call is obvious, the second call is a mystery.

Thanks in anticipation.

Hi Tom,

I have had a short listen but will give it some thought and try to match these up to something. I will post later tonight with an answer.

Cheers,
Gordon

Hi Tom.

I have done a bit of work on these and here is one deffinite and one possible.

The first once is clearly a square-tailed nightjar as seen from the comparison sonogram

The second, I could not find a perfect match but I think it is one of the many variations of the jumbled nad varied song of a Fork-tailed Drongo.

Cheers.

Tom replied the topic:
Thanks Doug and Gordon

I believe the "rattling" start (like White-faced Scops-Owl) and the lack of the standard "trill" of the Squaretailed Nightjar had me baffled.

Hi there,

Bit of a late reply. I just had a listen to the two bird calls you posted. The second mystery call is the flight of a Square-tailed nightjar, in words described as krrr-whomp. The call is, in fact, recorded on the track of this species in Guy Gibbon's SA Bird Sounds.

Regards Ben
