Hi all.

I discovered free 1:50 000 maps of the entire country.......

1) Go to
http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/help/download_sid.html
and download MrSID Viewer

2) Go to MadMapper
http://www.madmappers.com/browse.php?TY=R&CO=za
Download the map and open it in MrSID viewer
expand the South Africa line
Expand sgSA50k
Select the province
and click on the grid for the 1:50 000 map you want.

I downloaded DIVA-GIS[/url:3nuuu0dg] which apparently comes with the DVD you can get from the SABAP2 people.

I've downloaded a number of maps from Madmappers and noticed that the maps are quite outdated (when I look at the one for Strand will say about 8 years). Does anyone know if the maps available on the DVD are more up to date?

Also stumbled upon this website Latitude / Longitude Coordinate Converter[/url:3nuuu0dg] which might also be helpful to some

Hi Francois,
There are simply way too many maps for them to be updated regularly. I remember we often had to use base maps up to 20 years old for certain areas (while doing geotech mapping), probably because updating maps of some areas are lower down on the priority list than others.
