I don't know if this is of interest to anyone but the fields inside the Krugersdorp sewage works (the sewage works next to the Krugersdorp GR) are currently supporting a health population of Abdim's Storks with the occasional white Stork thrown in for good measure. The storks can be seen in these fields while driving around the GR (on the left hand side as you near the end of the loop) but for better views I recomend you enter the sewage works themselves (This way you also don't have to pay to enter the GR). I did also hear Orange river Francolin calling whilst I was photographing the Storks. The fields are actually well manicured lawns which seem to be maintained in order to be sold of as instant lawn. The combination of the sewage works and the mowing of the grass seems to produce lots of easy food for the Storks. It is my opinion that they will be around in these fields for a while longer but then again we all know how unpredictable birds can be.

We're going to be in Krugersdorp on Sunday afternoon visiting Mariana's brother. Could you give me directions to the sewage works or a street name for the GPS? These would both be lifers for us so if it's not too far from where we're going we could pop in on the way back. We'll be in Krugersdorp West, coming in from the end of Robert Broom Drive where there's an entrance to the GR. Would appreciate some directions, then you can say you helped me get 13 lifers (the first 11 being at Northern Farm)

Hi Graeme it seems that you will be very close then. The start of entrance road (I believe it is called Hillclimb Dr) is at the intersection of Verster street and Barta Street in Delporton(Suburb). It is sign posted from here. Head down the hill carefully as the road bends very sharply in places. You go past the plant on your right and through one gate. As you approach the gate to the instant lawn growning place you take a right turn which will lead you onto a dirt track. This track goes directly through the centre of the field where the both storks have been seen. I am not sure of this but I think the gate that you have to go through might be closed on Sundays. However on both my visits I have seen Abdim's Storks roosting in a tree close to the top of the hill well before reaching the gate. The tree is on the right handside and before you reach the first bend if you are heading down the hill. Good luck if you try. There were about 80 Abdim's and 5 white Storks in the fields when I was there on Wednesday.

Thanks Duncan, very much appreciated. I know we pass the turn-off where you go down to the Delporton licensing office so I think we will be close enough. We basically follow Robert Broom Drive right to the end, to that T-junction where the right turn takes you into the game reserve and we turn left instead to go to Krugersdorp West where Chris lives. I'll let you know how we get on.

Of course the downside of this is that Mariana's been telling all her work colleagues how romantic I am, taking her to a sewage works on Valentine's Day! If it's any consolation, I'm taking her out for dinner on Monday night to celebrate the 2nd anniversary of my ariival in South Africa. I would have arrived on Valentine's Day, had it not been for fog at Charles de Gaulle Airport

As you know where the turn of to the Delporton licensing office is I think I can offer some better directions.

If approaching from roodepoort on Robert Broom Drive.

Turn right at the above turn off as if you are heading for the licensing department. At the first 4 way stop turn right. Then take your first left. At the end of this road (the intersection of Verster street and Barta Street) turn right and start heading down the hill. I reckon it is 1km or less from Robert Broom Drive to the top of the hill and maybe 100m further to the tree where I have seen the Abdim's Storks roosting. Continue down the hill to the fields if the gate is open as I think this is your best chance of seeing White Storks.

Cheers
Regards Duncan
PS Something to block the nose might make an awesome valentines day present as the smell when driving past the treatment plant can be a little overpowering.

It's OK, we're taking her car which has aircon that actually works (unlike mine) so we can keep the windows closed until we absolutely have to open them to see the birds. :D

I went back to the sewage works this afternoon in the hope of getting a few photo of the storks. Unfortunately there were no white storks around and although there were plenty of Abdim's Storks around (80+) they didnt present me with any good opportunities. However I did manage to find some other very interesting species in the fields in Yellow Wagtail and Red-capped Lark. Lastly and unbelievably I managed to see my third stork species in the area in Marabou Stork (this was seen from the sewage works but was in the GR).
